Chapter 10

Janessa woke to Haeran gently shaking her arm. “Time to get up if you want to eat before we are due to lift off. No need if you are not yet hungry. There is plenty of food on board, but you will have to wait until the crew is ready to serve breakfast around nine.”

“I couldn’t possibly eat at this time of day, Haeran,” she said rather grumpily. “What time is it, anyway?” She rubbed her eyes and stretched.

“It is three-thirty. Breakfast or not, you must get up if we are to make it to the meeting point in time, particularly if you are going to take forever to get ready.”

She sat up in bed and pushed her mussed-up hair out of her eyes.

“Wear something comfortable,” he said.

“How can you be in such a good mood at this ungodly hour?” she said, and grumpily rubbed her eyes again. “Sickening, really.”

“I am excited to show you my home—well, our home if you decide to stay,” he said as he grabbed his clothes from their resting spot and began to dress. “And we are on a carefully planned schedule. If we want to avoid any possibility of being detected, a pre-dawn take off is the best option. It cannot be helped. I do not think you want your Coast Guard showing up to send us on our way. That would definitely cause a delay, as we would have to wipe their memories and such, and then we would be late for breakfast. We have discovered your species’ tendency to get agitated when they do not eat on time.” He planted a kiss on her forehead and grinned.

“Yeah, yeah. Doesn’t mean you have to be so chipper about it,” she grumped, and slowly rolled out of bed.

With a little prodding, Haeran managed to get her to their designated meeting spot before the arranged time.

“They haven’t arrived yet?” Janessa asked as they approached. “I could’ve slept longer.”

“They are cloaked,” he replied.

“Guess I won’t catch a glimpse of a UFO after all,” she said, her disappointment clear. A mischievous glint appeared in her eye as she realized what he had said. “And you said if I didn’t get up, you’d have to mind wipe the Coast Guard, and here you are saying the ships are cloaked. Tsk tsk. The deception is in full force today, folks.”

Haeran shook his head and smirked. “You will have the opportunity when we approach the mothership. She will drop her cloaking as we approach to make embarking safer, and you will have a brief glimpse. You can check them out at your leisure when we arrive on Haenaria. As for what your people call a white lie, you left me no other choice. Had I done otherwise, we never would have arrived on time, as you were rather desperately clinging to the bed covers. At least you are in better humor now.”

As they got closer, she did a double-take as she noticed a staircase that appeared to go nowhere.
